The Lady Lies

Moonlight_Shinobi_by_SpAzZnaticShuRIken

The man steps out in the moonlight
At the sound of a scream from below.
He thinks he is a warrior
So he picks up his sword and goes.

From the mouth of the monster
He rescues the maiden fair.
But we know she’s a demon
Come to lure him to demon’s lair.

Through restless foliage and tall trees he leads
To a house in a clearing, a place in her fear she calls home.

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.”

And though his body bids him
To enter in with her,
There was something in her manner
That his mind could not ignore.

Also it is whispered
In the kingdom far and wide,
To beware a little cottage
In the forest in a glade.

House-in-the-forest

For who knows what magic takes place in his world?
So he just thanks her kindly preparing to go on his way.

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.

Come to my garden,
Taste the fruits and the spices of love.
You can’t resist me,
I’m the kind that your dreams tell you of.”

“So glad you could make it
We had everything arranged.
So glad you saw fit to pay a call.”

Some men never listen,
And others never learn,
But why this man did as he did
Only he will ever know.

He knew he was walking
Into a waiting trap,
Neatly set up for him
With a bait so richly wrapped.

So he went inside there to take on what he found
But he never escaped them, for who can escape what he desires?

“Come with me, I need you,
I fear the dark and I live all alone.
I’ll give you wine and food too
And something special after if you like.”

I love this song and the whole album Then There Were Three. The title was meant to say they were now three after Peter Gabriel left and this was the first album released after his departure.

Since my youth was devoid of modern music I didn’t pick up that these were lyrics to a song until I clicked on the YouTube link, but I was captivated by the imagery as I read. This would have been released when I was 15, 3 years before I met Mr. Wolf. I have to rely on him for any pre 1981 music references!

    • Dear Bopeep,
I’m delighted you enjoyed the imagery. I’m curious what type of music did you listen to? I’m pleased you enjoyed this post.

Astral- my parents were both music majors in college, in the ’50’s. I grew up on a steady diet of classical and opera, with the occasional LP of the “Weavers” thrown in. No rock music was allowed. I did get a Carpenter’s Record for Christmas from an aunt, but I had nothing to play it on. I actually attend a rock concert in highschool with a friend who snuck me out of the house-The Beachboys, and then later, when I was about 17, while my parents were busy trying to kill each other, and weren’t paying attention, I went to a Blue Oyster Cult concert (WOW) then when i was still 17, I tried to sneak into Todd Rundgren concert (had no idea who he was, there was alcohol involved) ended up crashing at a mafia owned house, spent the next morning trying to explain to the man in the dark suit why I didn’t have the rent that month. Then I got arrested. All in the same weekend. 17-18 was an interesting year.

      • Dearest Bo,
I apologize for this very late reply. Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. Wow what a weekend.
To have seen B.O.C. and Todd Rundgren they must have been Awesome concerts. My first concert was Jethro Tull whom I never really cared for. I don’t think I even bought the ticket.
I remember while playing Kashmir by Zeppelin, my Dad “yelling” from the other room for me to turn down “that funeral music”. I just figured everyone my age at that time frame listened to Zeppelin, Genesis, Triumph, and the list goes on.
